Tallahassee, Florida: A City for All Seasons

The Florida Panhandle is a narrow strip of land between the border with Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico. Near its center at the edge of the Apalachicola National Forest, lies the city of Tallahassee, the capitol of Florida and the county seat of Leon County. Tallahassee's climate and vegetation are more typical of the American South than the palm tree-laden coastal areas of the rest of Florida, but the mild weather has attracted nearly 169,000 residents and earned it the nickname "a city for all seasons." The name Tallahassee means "old fields" in the language of the Muskogean tribe of Native Americans.

Over the past twenty-odd years Tallahassee, FL has collected an impressive array of accolades celebrating its quality of life. It is a National Arbor Day Foundation Tree City, an All-American City, one of the Southeast's top three medium-sized cities, and the number two college town in America.

Tallahassee, FL's economy is heavily weighted toward white-collar jobs in the service and high-tech industry. Many of its citizens work with computers, in sales, office, teaching, or administrative jobs. General Dynamics Land Systems is located in the city, as are the central branches of Florida State University, Florida A&M University and the Tallahassee Community College along with several branch universities and smaller technical colleges.

Attractions in Tallahassee, FL include numerous recreational lakes and parks, the Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park, a car museum, a fine arts museum, the state capitol, the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, and the Mission San Luis de Apalachee.
