You're following a spouse or parent as they relocate to Tallahassee, Florida, which means you lose your job as a Toronto caterer. You've worked at your old job for so long that you have no idea how to go about getting a new job in Tallahassee. Where do you start? Who do you speak to? What materials will you need to get started? We can help you. Read our employment guide to Tallahassee for advice on how to proceed.
Compiling an Application Package
Before you start applying for jobs you need to put together a package that represents what you have to offer a company. Your resume should outline your education and work history for your old Ontario franchise. Your cover letter is a polite introduction and overview of your worth. References confirm you haven't lied on your applications, and certificates are needed for any job with specific qualifications (such as WHIMIS).
The Internet
Your first stop in any job search is the internet. Job sites like Monster or Workopolis have listings for nearly every city in the country, from Orange County bankruptcy attorneys to Tallahassee teachers. But there are literally thousands of websites with job listings concerning the city, from small local ones to huge national chains. Some are general, others are specific to one profession, so be prepared to spend several days or weeks reading ads and applying.
Publications
If you haven't had much luck with the internet, turn to the tried and true source: local papers. Tallahassee's is known as the Tallahassee Democrat. You can also look in trade publications for your area of expertise as well. Along with the articles on research and development tax credits in the local university's physics department newsletter, there may be a job advertised. Leave no stone unturned. A great place to find these publications at no cost to you is the Tallahassee public library.
In Person
Drop into the community center nearest you and take a look at their job boards. The city usually has a job bank or drop in center. If all else fails and you haven't had any offers, you can always take your resume package and drop by businesses you think you would be a good fit for. If you have five years experience with pool chemicals, apply to a water treatment chemical supplier. Most times, even if they don't have any positions open at the time, they'll keep your resume on file in case anything opens up.
